How Phone Number Validation Works

Phone number validation checks whether a given number conforms to the internationally recognized E.164 standard maintained by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). E.164 defines that a valid international number must start with a country code, followed by a subscriber number, for a combined maximum of 15 digits.

1

Parse & Normalize

Strip spaces, dashes, and parentheses. Detect whether the number starts with a + or 00 international prefix.

2

Match Country Code

Compare the leading digits against a database of ITU-assigned country calling codes to identify the country of origin.

3

Validate Length & Prefix

Check that the total digit count matches the expected range for that country and verify the subscriber number prefix.

Country codes are assigned by the ITU and range from 1 digit (e.g., +1 for North America) to 3 digits (e.g., +852 for Hong Kong). Each country then defines its own numbering plan specifying valid subscriber number lengths and prefix allocations for mobile, landline, toll-free, and premium-rate numbers.

For businesses, validation matters because invalid numbers waste SMS credits, cause callback failures, and degrade CRM data quality. Validating numbers at the point of entry prevents downstream problems across sales, support, and marketing workflows.

Why Validate Phone Numbers?

Reduce Failed Calls

Catch invalid numbers before they reach your dialler. Fewer failed connection attempts means higher agent productivity and lower telecom costs.

Improve CRM Data Quality

Clean phone number data prevents duplicate records, failed automations, and broken lead routing. Validate at the point of entry for best results.

Avoid Wasted SMS Credits

Every SMS sent to an invalid number is money thrown away. Validate before sending to protect your messaging budget and improve delivery rates.

Identify Number Type

Know whether you are calling a mobile or landline before choosing your outreach channel. SMS to a landline will always fail.

Correct Formatting Errors

Users enter numbers in dozens of formats. Validation normalizes everything to E.164 so your systems store and route numbers consistently.

Detect Country of Origin

Automatically identify the country from the dialling code. Route calls to the right regional team and apply the correct compliance rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is E.164 format? +

E.164 is the international telephone number formatting standard defined by the ITU. It specifies that numbers must start with a + sign followed by the country code and subscriber number, with a maximum of 15 digits total. For example, a US number becomes +14155552671. This format is used by telecoms, APIs, and CRM platforms worldwide for consistent number storage and routing.

How do I validate international phone numbers? +

To validate an international phone number, first ensure it includes a country code (the 1-3 digit prefix after the + sign). Then check the total digit count matches the expected length for that country — for example, UK numbers should have 12 digits including the country code 44. Finally, verify the subscriber number starts with a valid prefix for mobile or landline in that country.

How does mobile vs landline detection work? +

Mobile vs landline detection is based on the subscriber number prefix patterns specific to each country. For example, UK mobile numbers start with 07 (or +447), while UK landlines start with 01 or 02. US numbers are harder to classify because mobile and landline numbers share the same format. Detection accuracy varies by country — some countries have clear prefix-based separation, others do not.

Why do some numbers fail validation? +

Numbers can fail validation for several reasons: missing or incorrect country code, too few or too many digits for the given country, invalid subscriber number prefix, or formatting characters in the wrong position. Numbers from very small territories or newly allocated number ranges may also fail if they are not in the validation database. Always include the full country code with a + prefix for best results.

What country codes are supported? +

This tool supports over 30 of the most commonly used country codes, including +1 (US/Canada), +44 (UK), +61 (Australia), +91 (India), +33 (France), +49 (Germany), +81 (Japan), +86 (China), +55 (Brazil), +971 (UAE), +65 (Singapore), +852 (Hong Kong), and many more. The tool covers the vast majority of international business phone numbers.

Is this phone number validation tool free? +
